Plain-English help

Losing your title doesn't stop you from selling your car in Florida. The state issues a duplicate with form HSMV 82101, and you can often get it fast.

Quick answer: File form HSMV 82101 for a Florida duplicate title — about $75.25 for an electronic title, online through the MyDMV Portal or in person at your county tax collector, with a roughly $10 same-day “fast title” option. Important: if the car still has an active loan, only the lienholder can request the duplicate.

Three ways to get a duplicate

You have three options to request a Florida duplicate title with form HSMV 82101:

  • Online through the state's MyDMV Portal
  • In person at your county tax collector's office — with a fast title option that gets you the duplicate the same day
  • By mail to your local tax collector

Bring a valid government-issued photo ID; if your address has changed, bring proof of your current residence.

What it costs

As of 2026, a duplicate electronic title runs about $75.25; having a paper title mailed is about $77.75; and the in-person fast title (same-day) service adds roughly $10. Fees change and vary a little by county — confirm current amounts with your county tax collector.

The lien exception (important)

Here's the catch most people miss: if the vehicle still has an active lien (an unpaid loan), only the lienholder — not the owner — can request the duplicate title. If you still owe on the car, the request runs through your lender. If you've paid it off but the lien was never released, that has to be cleared first (see our guide on selling a car with a loan).

Electronic vs. paper — you don't need paper to sell

Florida issues most titles electronically, stored in the state database. You don't need a printed title to sell — an electronic title can be transferred at a tax collector or license service center. A paper copy is optional and costs a little extra.

How we help

When we buy your car, we can often help you complete the duplicate title the same day, electronically — one less trip to the tax collector's office. Don't let a missing title stop you from calling.

Can I sell my car without the title?

How fast can I get a duplicate title?

In person with the fast-title option, the same day. Online or by mail, an electronic title takes a few business days; a mailed paper copy can take several weeks.
